Hello, my name is Mela!
I made this website mainly as a place to share my art but also as an hobby, so I update it whenever I feel like it.
I think that, especially in real life, I give the impression of being too serious. I am a reserved person and, even if I meet someone I like, I often feel embarassed trying to approach them. I can look like someone who wants to stay alone. It isn't always how I am and how I want to look like and it makes it difficult for me to make new friends.
So, at least on the Internet, I want my home to be colorful and playful! Although there may still be parts of this website that are more serious than others, for the rest I want this to be a mostly carefree place where I can express what I have inside of me in the ways I want.
As you may have understood from before, I'm an artist who always tries to improve. If you want, you can take a look at some of the stuff I've made on the art page. A lot of them are fan art, but I also draw other things.
My interests and hobbies
Some of my interests include anime and videogames, despite me not watching or playing them as much as I used to. My favourite anime are JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Land of the Lustrous, while my favorite videogames are Minecraft and various The Legend of Zelda games.
I also listen a lot to Vocaloid songs and, because Vocaloid has had a big influence on me, I have dedicated a part of my website to it. I called it the Vocaradio! (What an original name, right?)
Why did I make this website?
I originally created this website because I felt too limited and pressured by social media: having to post constantly and seeing others gain much more engagement than me despite me putting a lot of effort into what I did made me feel very discouraged and started having a bad impact on my mental health. Then, coincidentally, I discovered I could make my own website on Neocities, and it felt like a new world had opened to me.
In real life I'm nobody, and on the Internet I'm also nobody, but here I can say I live in a candy castle and no one will say anything. I can make my website look however I want, share my art at my own pace, dedicate pages to the things I like the most... I don't have the limitations I had on social media, both from freedom and visual point of view (I mean, everything looks the same and there's no personalization at all, don't you get bored?). I discovered how fun surfing the web actually is. What kind of new websites will I find? What is shared on them? How will they look like? Where will their links bring me to?
Speaking of this, I think linking to other sites is one of the most important parts of a website. Think of a real web, made out of strings connected together: without connections, there is no web. The same thing is for websites: a website that links to nowhere is not really connected to the rest of the web. When you visit other people's "homes" you can learn something new, but it's even better if every website helps you find out other websites through links, and discover even more new things.
This is just my own experience when I first approached Neocities and the small web, and it's still going on to this day. There's so much more I'd like so say about this, but I'd probably end up writing an essay and I don't want to sound too serious. What I think truly is the most important thing, is that the web should be interesting and fun!
Contacts
And... you've finally made it to the end! Or maybe you just skipped to the end, for whatever reason. I can understand that. If you ever want to contact me, I'm not on social media, but you can find me sometimes on the MelonLand Forum as Mela, or feel free to send me an email at melacandyc@gmail.com even if it's just a comment about this website.
